Hole-by Hole Guide

From the opening drive to the final putt, each hole presents its own challenge and character.

Hole #1

A tough par 4 to start off the front 9 for the shorter hitters.

Your Tee Shot has to contend with the drain crossing the course. While dry most of the year and possible to play out of the hazard, during wet weather you definitely don't want to land in it.

Long hitters will certainly carry it, but don't discount laying up and playing the hole as a 3 shots to the green.

The green slopes back to front, and pin positions near the front best be respected. Putts from above the hole are very challenging indeed.

Hole #2

You find the 2nd hole by heading out of the race course and into the forest.

The Tee Shot can be anything from a fairway wood to an iron. Placing the ball in the centre of the fairway far enough past the trees guarding the left hand side of the fairway is key to setting up your second shot.

The green has many undulations with the left side and right rear likely to feed balls off the putting surface.

Hole #3

Our first Par 3 might look like a straight forward shot, but a rise in the fairway about 40 metres before the green makes it visually confusing and many balls are left well short.

Spraying the ball left or right into the trees or going long on this hole can be punishing.

Hole #4

Though not a long hole a driver will be the club of choice of most players.

Favouring the centre left of the fairway will give you the best line into the green for your second shot as a large tree guards it for shots that have drifted too far to the right.

A miss to the right of the green makes for a very difficult scramble for par.

Hole #5

Our next Par 3 is a short one where most will be hitting something from 8 iron to gap wedge.

The green is elevated from the tee and the front is guarded by 2 deep bunkers. It can be challenging getting the correct distance to hit the green.

Out of bounds on the left and long.
.

Hole #6

Our longest Par 5 is a really challenging hole and many will tell you that it's handicap rating of 11 doesn't reflect how difficult it is. For the mid to high handicapper it will take 3 very good shots to get to the green.

Spraying any shot into the trees lining the fairway will certainly add a stroke to your score.

A driver down the centre to left side of the fairway is ideal to set up for your second shot. Unless you are a very long hitter your second will be either just short or a bit long of the drain at the apex of the fairway, leaving a mid to long third shot into the large green that slopes from back to front.

Hole #7

There are Out of Bounds down the left side of the fairway and several trees that line the drain on the left side. Leaving a small ideal area to take your second shot.

Scoring well on this hole is set up by your Tee Shot.

Depending on the Tee Block position you need a shot of 150 - 180 meters to get past the trees in order to open up the green.

Hole #8

The fairway on 8 is heavily tree lined with another 2 trees in the middle of the fairway guarding the green.

You need a high ball flight as even well struck balls can clip one of these trees and get knocked down before reaching the green.

Out of bounds along the left side of the fairway and a drain along the right will penalise those that spray the Tee Shot. Going long should be avoided at all cost.

Hole #9

Back inside the race course we get to another Par 5.

For the long hitters a drive just short of the drain sits up a possible second shot into the green if the wind isn't into your face. The rest of us will play it as an easy 3.

The green is guarded by bunkers left and right and another long.

Hole #10

Your back 9 starts off with a relatively easy Par 5. The wind is often at your back and long hitters will need to take care to not run into the drain, or really take it on and fly it.

The green is guarded by bunkers left and right with plenty of room behind that isn't a bad place to leave for a second or even third shot.

Hole #11

Hole 11 is a long Par 4 and often plays into a strong headwind so getting to the green in 2 is more rare than common.

There is lots of room on either side of the fairway all the way to the green with the only real trouble the drain crossing the fairway and a few trees that are only in play with a wayward shot.

Hole #12

This Par 3 plays longer than it's says, with the wind often into your face off the left.

The moguls guarding the front of the green have rough length grass and a bunker to the left make for challenging second shots if you miss the short grass.

Hole #13

This short Par 4 presents lots of challenges. Running along the edge of the Race Course, pulling a shot to the left is a potential lost ball.

Care must be taken on the Tee Shot by the long hitters, or when the course is hard and dry. Landing in the drain guarding the green complex is sure to add a stroke you you score.

The second shot isn't any easier. While usually just a wedge or short iron in hand, the drain is visually intimidating and bunkers right and long make for an exciting hole. Pars are common as is 8 or more.

Hole #14

Our longest Par 3. The green is difficult to hit and hold unless your ball flight has a very high trajectory.

Many with a lower ball flight will find success by running their ball up the narrow opening to the green.

Hole #15

The most difficult hole on the course for a reason.

There are Out of Bounds down the entire length of the hole, and drifting into the trees on either side of the fairway will certainly add at least one shot to your score.

Trees in the fairway pose problems with your second and perhaps third shots.

The ideal Tee Shot would be slightly to the left or right of the first large tree in the fairway. But this is only for the very longest of hitters. Most will be well short of this so your next shot is best to be right of the next two trees on the left side of fairway.

Hole #16

This hole takes 4 good shots to walk away with Par.

The Tee Shot is through a pinched in area with accuracy and correct distance at a premium. Spraying shots into the trees will leave you with no choice but to pitch out.

Leave it short or too far right and the second shot into the green is next to impossible.

The front half of the green slopes severely back to front and pin positions here require the ball to be below the hole.

Hole #17

Back inside the Race Course balls pulled left will find the long grass in a penalty area.

If you can find the ball you are entitled to play it, but if not it's a lost stroke and take a drop.

The green is protected by moguls and bunker on the right.

Hole #18

Often playing into a head wind, the 18th is fairly straightforward Tee Shot. Only the very longest of hitters need to worry about the drain off the tee.

Bunches of Native Grasses line the fairway to the left catching wayward drives. Trees and moguls to the right are less punishing.

On the green side of the drain Palms on the right of the fairway can pose problems for your approach. Best to stay to the left of them.

The green is large and fairly flat but raised up a meter or more above the fairway. Balls not reaching the green on the fly are unlikely to run on.
